The Gospel at Mass this week was the story of Martha and Mary. It’s a story well known to most of us Catholics, of two sisters who entertain Jesus in their home. One takes a seat at His feet while the other rushes around, preparing the house and the meal, and just generally performing the typical hostess type activities. Basically, they represent quite clearly the two sides to most Christian’s lives: learning and serving, spirit and flesh. The problem is, people tend to think that it is telling us to choose only one part, the better part, and to toss the other part aside.
